In the pigment and ink industry, XIRAN® grades are used as dispersants. In coatings, styrene provides the hardness of the coating while the presence of the polar maleic anhydride results into adhesion improvement to the substrate.

Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers are used in these markets:

  • To offer adhesion improvement to the substrate
  • To improve hydrophobicity
  • To offer color strength
  • To offer viscosity stability
  • To improve pigment wetting

The design of the dispersing agent is important for the colloidal stabilization of the pigment concentrates and it has also an influence on the end properties of the formulation.

Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers are used for both organic and inorganic pigments to provide superior dispersion stability and lower viscosity systems. These polymeric dispersing agents are less likely to migrate to the surface compared to traditionally used monomeric surfactants. In addition to this, styrene maleic anhydride copolymers are good pigments surface modifiers and have the ability to improve the ink’s or coating’s hydrophobicity, gloss and scrub resistance and are also very compatible with many neutral and alkaline pH latexes and paints.

XIRAN® grades can suit the exact needs of the paper makers thanks to the flexibility of their chemical modification. Most popular applications for XIRAN® grades in the paper industry include surface treatment of paper and they are used as paper polymer sizing agents as well as coating additives as they offer improved printability and surface of the final paper and paperboards.

As surface sizing agents, XIRAN® copolymers provide effective cross-linking between the components of surface size solution and cellulose when applied on the paper surface, resulting in:

  • Increased surface strength
  • Improved hydrophobicity
  • Improved coefficient of friction
  • Improved printability and toner adhesion
  • Higher cost effectiveness

In addition to this, XIRAN® copolymers reduce linting and dusting in high ash papers. The grades of paper that can benefit from the above attributes are generally fine papers, such as offset grades, coating base, copier paper or any other printing and writing grades. The technology options for paper makers under XIRAN® umbrella aimed at surface treatment are: XIRAN® alkali salt solutions, XIRAN® imide dispersions and XIRAN® polymer emulsions.

As a coating additive, the use of modified XIRAN® solutions or dispersions results in:

  • Correct coating color rheology and water retention characteristics
  • Improved wet rub resistance
  • Ink and coating hold-out
  • Improved printability
  • Improved coating strength in systems containing insolubilizers

Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers are widely used in adhesive applications due to their inherent hydrophobicity and adjustability of the copolymer. The copolymer backbone modification of the styrene/maleic anhydride ratio and Mw has a large effect on Tg, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, and solubility and explains their success in many applications.

Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers contribute to adhesion improvement as they can:

  • Improve bond strength
  • Improve hydrophobicity and chemical and corrosion resistance
  • Improve compatibility
  • Offer high heat resistance
  • Increase cross-linking density
  • Increase alkaline solubility and removability

More specifically styrene maleic anhydride works synergistically with starch in water based adhesives to significantly improve water resistance which is necessary for most bottle labeling applications requiring ice water resistance and alkaline removability. This property makes XIRAN® suitable for debonding on demand applications.

It has also been used in reactive hot melt adhesives to improve green strength and expand temperature range as well as open time. In standard hot melts styrene maleic anhydride copolymers are used to allow removability under alkaline conditions and are also considered reactive polymeric dispersing agents and have been used to produce emulsion polymerization polymers due to the ability to improve hydrophobicity, temperature resistance and shear protection.

As a matter of fact, XIRAN® improves the heat resistance of emulsion polymerization latex such as styrene acrylic allowing them to be used in heat seal coatings for flexible packaging.

The polymeric structure of styrene maleic anhydride results in higher steric hindrance which is extremely beneficial for dispersing agents and also ensures less migration compared to traditionally used monomeric surfactants.

Other applications include FDA approved tackifier dispersions, reactive compatibilizer for amine terminated silane functional polymers and alcohol scavengers for thermosetting adhesives.
