An excellent example of the use of XIRAN® grades as cross-linking agent (curing agent) is that of Copper Clad Laminates (CCL) for PCB production due to our copolymers’ ability to improve thermal stability and enhance electrical properties.

Epoxy resins need to be cured/ hardened to reach their final properties. The use of XIRAN®gives cured epoxies the desirable characteristics such as improved electrical properties (lower Df),improved thermal properties (higher Tg) and lower coefficient of thermal expansion. In addition, the cured with XIRAN® epoxy resins will have improved adhesion as well as higher moisture resistance compared to the standard epoxy.

XIRAN® is the ideal polymer to improve your thermal performance (HDT, Vicat and Tg) and to save cost. Moreover, due to the very low residual volatiles and oligomers it can make your materials compliant towards total emission of organic volatiles.

The addition of XIRAN® will increase the thermal properties of many engineering plastic systems like ABS, (HI)PS, PMMA or PVC. Additionally this will improve the rigidity and strength of the compounds, with a better dimensional precision, low shrinkage and improved adhesion.

These thermosetting binder systems are no added formaldehyde binder systems used as an alternative to acrylic and phenolic resins. They exhibit good wet strength as well as excellent moisture resistance and strength after curing which justify among other benefits their superior performance. XIRAN® binder systems were specifically designed to meet end users demands and they do not emit VOC’s such as phenol or formaldehyde during the manufacturing process and its subsequent use.

Moreover, styrene maleic anhydride hydrolyzed solutions (XIRAN® SL) have good adhesion to glass and are compatible with natural materials like starch and soya proteins. They are used to improve performance of other systems such as Phenol-Formaldehyde, Urea-Formaldehyde, Melamine Formaldehyde systems or other types of no added formaldehyde systems.

Specialty polymers

In specialty polymer applications, the use of maleic anhydride modified polymers in adhesives is well known. They are often used to increase adhesion to polar surfaces, improve water resistance and alkali solubility. The combination of water resistance and alkali solubility makes XIRAN® styrene maleic anhydride an ideal additive for label adhesives.

XIRAN® also improves the heat resistance of emulsion polymerization latex such as styrene acrylic allowing them to be used in heat seal coatings for flexible packaging.Styrene maleic anhydride is also used in paper sizing to provide the combination of hydrophobicity and improved toner adhesion. By using XIRAN® copolymers as cross-linking agents in Copper Clad Laminates (CCL) for the production of PCBs, adhesion improvement to copper and glass filaments can be also achieved.

The design of the dispersing agent is important for the colloidal stabilization of the pigment concentrates and it has also an influence on the end properties of the formulation.

Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers are used for both organic and inorganic pigments to provide superior dispersion stability and lower viscosity systems. These polymeric dispersing agents are less likely to migrate to the surface compared to traditionally used monomeric surfactants. In addition to this, styrene maleic anhydride copolymers are good pigments surface modifiers and have the ability to improve the ink’s or coating’s hydrophobicity, gloss and scrub resistance and are also very compatible with many neutral and alkaline pH latexes and paints.

XIRAN® hydrolyzed solutions (XIRAN® SL) are also used in paraffin wax emulsions acting as hydrophobic dispersing agents.  Their ability to drastically imidize improves the hydrophobicity of the systems.

XIRAN® outperforms many other plastics when it comes to the production of large and high precision components requiring dimensional stability, low creep, high temperature resistance, stiffness and low warpage. Its ability to mold within very tight tolerances makes XIRAN® the ideal material for complex and precise parts with a high design freedom, allowing multiple parts and functional features to be integrated in a single-shot molding at no additional cost.

Sunroof frames are an excellent example where XIRAN® compounds are used to produce large parts with a high dimensional stability with low creep. The use of XIRAN materials offer designers a weight and cost reduction and at the same time offering products with even greater functionalities and value added features.

Warpage is lower in XIRAN® compounds(left) is lower than PP-GF(right).

Styrene maleic anhydride resins are hydrophobic but they can be easily hydrolyzed in caustic solutions giving aqueous anionic salt solutions. When dried, sodium and potassium salts demonstrate hydrophilic properties and as a result they are appreciated in water removable applications. On the other hand, the hydrophobic behavior of ammonium salt solutions after drying is valued for every application where water resistance is needed.

Polyscope supplies hydrolyzed styrene maleic anhydride copolymers as sodium, potassium and ammonium salt solutions under the brand name XIRAN® SL. These are low viscosity, low VOC, freeze-thaw stable solutions with high dry solid content.XIRAN® SL grades can be used as dispersants in the following applications: pigments, inks and coatings, paraffin wax emulsions, adhesives and paper sizing.

Moreover, styrene maleic anhydride hydrolyzed solutions (XIRAN® SL) have good adhesion to glass and are compatible with natural materials like starch and soya proteins.
